A catchment based approach
Upland River Conservation
What
We are a registered non profit company committed to conservation of catchments.
Our approach is to support landowners by helping them execute on conservation objectives for which they need help.
We aim to link landowners with those who use the water that they produce, and so to broker arrangements that will see to improvements in the quantity and quality of water leaving their land.
Where
Our area is the eastern Drakensberg drainage, in KZN and the Eastern Cape of South Africa, and largely within the Critical Water Source Areas, as identified by WWF, WRC and others, and as supported by government.
These areas represent 10% of the country’s land surface area, but produce 50% of the water.
How
We aim to support landowners by enabling activities which would not normally be economically sustainable in their businesses or communities, but would benefit the catchment. Examples are remediation of dongas; exclusion of riparian zones; exploring grazing and burning regimes; securing the services of experts for farmer study groups; removal of alien invasive trees; re-establishment of grasslands.
